Tupac Shakur’s iconic legacy is currently reaching a cultural climax, one year shy of the 20th anniversary of his death. Its zenith is perhaps the new All Eyez On Me: The Writings Of Tupac Shakur exhibit, a first-of-its-kind display for a rapper at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles.
Born in New York City, Shakur moved to LA (living part-time in Atlanta also) in 1995 after being bailed out of jail for $1.4 million by Suge Knight in exchange for signing to his Death Row Records. He immediately showed pride in the Westside in interviews and on wax, with songs like “California Love” and “To Live & Die In LA” hometown anthems to this day.
Sanctioned by his mother Afeni Shakur, All Eyez On Me: The Writings Of Tupac Shakur exhibit is a must-see if visiting the City of Angels over the next month. “Tupac Shakur was one of the most original and important of all hip-hop artists. His writings are both powerful and provocative,” Grammy Museum Executive DirectorRobert Santelli said in a statement. “It is an honor to be the first music museum to acknowledge Tupac’s legacy and to bring context to what was an incredible career.”
Featuring handwritten notes, lyrics and poems, interviews and performance footage plus outfits he wore (like the Versace suit he rocked to the 1996 Grammy Awards), All Eyez On Me: The Writings Of Tupac Shakur is the definitive exhibition of the late rapper’s work. “It means a lot to me that Bob Santelli and the Grammy Museum have chosen to honor my son with their upcoming exhibit of his works,” Afeni says. “Tupac’s writings are an honest reflection of his passions for, and about life. His timeless messages have instilled hope for those who have little, and for others, they serve as a catalyst for change. His words continue to motivate and inspire new generations.”
In addition to All Eyez On Me: The Writings Of Tupac Shakur (which runs till April 22) the Grammy Museum has four floors of exhibits exploring nearly 160 genres of music for the ultimate fan. Current highlights include The Taylor Swift Experience(on display through May 10) and for disco-flavored fashion inspiration, Donna Summer: Four Seasons Of Love (on display through April 19).
