10 Hair Extension Tips from Celebrity Stylist Cynthia Alvarez

Cynthia Alvarez is a New York City-based celebrity hairstylist that has worked with many familiar faces in entertainment today including Kerry Washington, Rita Ora, Alicia Keys, Keri Hilson, Tika Sumpter, and Keke Palmer. Here are 10 of her personal tips for women with weaves provided by Essence Magazine:

1. Care for your own hair first. 
2. Invest in quality hair extensions!
3. Assess how much time you will need for styling regularly.
4. Avoid glue-in styles; sew-ins are a more protective style.
5. Consider wearing wigs!
6. Don't overwhelm your extensions with products.
7. Take the weight of your weave into consideration.
8. Try mixing textures!
9. Customize your cut and color.
10. Refrain from using excessive heat on the hair.

Janelle Monae Covers Essence

After winning her first grammy earlier this year, she's busting out of the indie scene, and creating her own shine. Janelle is definitely one of our faves- we absolutely love her sound and unique sense of style.

Great Women and Great Hair in Hollywood

Essence Magazine hosted it’s fifth annual Women in Hollywood Luncheon to honor positive females in the tv and film industry.  Some of our fav ladies hit the scene looking beautiful as always with amazing hair to top off their look.  From Tika’s casual braid to Kerry’s ultra sleek half up do we love all these ladies looks.

Kerry Washington is looking fabulous in a white satin dress on the March 2012 cover of Essence Magazine!

The beautiful 35-year-old is an honoree of the magazine’s “Black Women in Hollywood” piece. In the interview she discusses what what it’s like being a black actress in the Hollywood industry.

“I think it’s a really special time to be a woman of color in this business. The landscape of who has the power is changing,” she said. “We are in more influential positions and are able to have a say in the stories that are told. I feel very lucky to be in the business now.…”

Rounded or Squared?

Have you ever been asked “rounded or squared” at the nail salon? Well I have, and I usually say sqaured, but lately, all of my favorite celebrities have been spotted with rounded nails! Essence Magazine’s October issue explains that “longer nails and almond shapes are at the forefront for fall”. They also suggest that nude colors are the go to hues for this season. I will be trying a longer rounded nail, but sorry Essence, I have to rock my Indique Pink!
